Spring 22 | Behind The ‘Provenance’ Campaign

Beloved by the mid-20th century artists who sought its splendour for inspiration, the golden light of the south of France was a recurring reference for Aje Co-founders Adrian Norris and Edwina Forest while designing the Spring 22 ‘Provenance’ collection.

Reminiscent of unhurried afternoons at La Colombe d’Or — the favoured French Riviera haunt of the era’s most revered artists and starlets — the Provence-inspired Wollumbi Estate in New South Wales’ Southern Highlands forms the backdrop for the season.

Photographed amid the sun’s languorous rise, the estate’s idyllic gardens and ivory walls resplendent in the early morning light, enjoy a behind the scenes look at the making of the Spring 22 ‘Provenance’ campaign.

Embodying the season’s golden aesthetic, the collection’s duet of artistic reverie and joyous light is explored with models Ayuol Manyok and Angelina Kendall as they embrace the sun’s serenade wearing the hand-made ‘Expression’ print, created by artist Chanel Tobler specially for ‘Provenance’.

Swirling with joie de vivre, the relationship between creative expression and emboldening sunshine is further symbolised in Spring 22’s ‘Neutral Stripe’ print, captured against the estate’s rustic ivory interiors. An homage to Henri Matisse, its painterly lines evoke the fauvism master’s bold simplification of form, moving fluidly from enriched impasto to drybrushed strokes and back again, coming to life in a rich palette of crème and chocolat.

Envisioned by Aje Creative Director Edwina Forest, the collection’s sartorial references to fragrant botanicals represent a nod to the multicoloured seasons of Provence. Lensed within the villa and against the gardens’ lush greenery, hand-painted floral prints and rose-like swirls of ripped organza unfurl across voluminous dresses, ruched accents and mini silhouettes.

Realised through artisanal Aje techniques, the French Riviera’s insouciant glamour comes to life in a palette of playful pinks. Underpinning the entire collection, the house’s dedication to raw beauty and tough femininity appears throughout, deftly defined by bold bubble hemlines, billowing sleeves and modern corset construction.
